The Ivory-billed Woodpecker, the largest of the American woodpeckers, has long been thought of as extinct, in large part from the destruction of its habitat, and from hunting. But in 2005, the prestigious journal Science reported a rather rare sighting of this endangered species in 2004 in eastern Arkansas (Science, Vol. 308, pp 1460-1462 (2005), and https://science.sciencemag.org/content/308/5727/1460). That report brought considerable excitement and rejoice among the lovers of birds, animals, and Nature. Though a few additional sightings in the forests along the Pearl River between Mississippi and Louisiana, and in the swamp lands of Florida panhandle were also reported, definitive photographic evidence is still lacking. Nevertheless, this image painted by Audubon while he was in Louisiana captures splendidly the beauty of this large woodpecker.

This gallery contains authentic Amsterdam Edition Lithographs of John James Audubon's the Birds of America. In his monumental masterpiece, viz., the Double Elephant Folio Edition of the Birds of America published during 1827-1838, the naturalist John James Audubon published 435 drawings of the birds he drew from his observations in Nature. These images were published as hand-colored engravings with aquatint and etching by Robert Havell, Jr in England. In 1971, the Johnson Reprint Corporation in New York and the the Amsterdam firm of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Ltd decided to produce the finest possible facsimile of this masterpiece. During 1971 and 1972, these two firms published only 250 copies of the entire 435 plates from the original Robert Havell's copy of the Double Elephant Folio using color photolithography process. These prints are known as the Amsterdam Edition of the Double Elephant folio, making it the first complete facsimile of the original monumental work of Audubon. To reproduce the texture of the original J Whatman paper used in the original Havell edition, the Amsterdam edition utilized the famous paper company G. Schut & Zonen to specially produce museum quality 100% cotton rag paper for printing these plates. Only a limited set of 250 copies of each of the plates were produced. The Amsterdam edition prints can be identified by the unique watermark "G. Schut & Zonen, (R), and Audubon" along the long edge. The full sheets measure approximately 39 1/2" x 26 3/8".
